President Obama Signs New Aviation Bill
The Continental Airlines crash that claimed the lives of 50 passengers prompted Representative Jerry F. Costello to push a bill that would increase the number of hours student pilots would need to log before being licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration. Before President Obama signed the new bill pilots were only required to log 250 hours of flying time. Officials believe that better trained pilots will help to prevent future plan crashes. Members of Congress cited seven separate incidents that they believed would have been prevented had pilots been required to log more hours of flying time before being issued pilot licenses. The families of plane crash victims also appeared before Congress and gave their support to the proposed bill before it was passed. The changes won't go into effect until the end of September, however airlines have already been responsive to the new bill. The new law will not only change how flying schools, airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration operates, it is also the most substantial change to aviation law that has occurred in more than a decade. New pilots that have less than 1,500 hours of logged flying time have been alerted to the changes, and most will be working diligently to be in compliance by September. Aviation schools will now need to increase the number of instructors that they hire as well as the tuition charged in order to accomidate these changes. Students will also end up spending more years in training before they are licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration.
