South Korea Defends Capsizing Chinese Fishing Boat
The South Korean Coast Guard stands accused of capsizing a Chinese commercial fishing boat off of the coast of South Korea. South Korea believes that video evidence captured at the time of the incident will prove that the South Korean Coast Guard acted within the confines of maritime law.rn When the South Korean Coast Guard attempted to investigate the activities of a Chinese fishing boat another Chinese owned boat allegedly blocked the ship's path. As a result, the South Korean government believes that the actions of the captain of the Liaoyingyu, the boat that was capsized, actually caused the catastrophic event. Of the 10 sailors that were on board the Liaoyingyu, three were apprehended by the South Korean Coast guard, five were taken on board a fellow Chinese fishing ship and one perished. One more sailor from the Liaoyingyu is still missing. A few South Korean Coast Guard officers were injured during the skirmish, but no serious injuries have been reported by South Korea. rnrn
rnrnA spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Jiang Yu, released a statement that read in part that China believes that South Korea was at fault. South Korean ministry officials have expressed their sorrow and the country has agreed to conduct an investigation while fully cooperating with Chinese officials. Sonar equipment as well as video cameras captured footage of the events that unfolded directly before the incident. Neither China nor South Korea wants the unfortunate event to damage their international relations, however, it appears that neither party is willing to accept fault.
